A special needs person is no different from anyone else when it comes to their oral health. They have the same needs as anyone else in terms of brushing, flossing and dental visits. Special needs patients can include, but are not limited to the elderly; people with mobility issues; people living with mental disabilities or a mental illness; those with complex medical issues, or with emotional or behavioral conditions.

There are more and more programs designed to address dental needs and treatments for people with special needs; and more dentists are taking continuing education classes to broaden their knowledge base. Special needs patients may require shorter appointments, or more assistants during exams. The caregiver and the dentist need to work together when discussing a course of treatment for a special needs patient.
